WICK: Burning Thread — factsheet, description and assets

WICK is a free iPhone game in which you do not control a character — you control the rope. Two fingers hold a single burning thread whose total length never changes, so the distance between your fingers is the game's only input. Fuel is at once the health bar and the light radius: lighting the world is what kills you.

Description

The last sun has gone out. What is left of the light is a single burning thread, held between your two fingers. Bring them together and the thread sags into a basket — cold and dim, but able to catch a falling ember and carry it across the room. Spread them apart and it snaps taut: hot enough to light lanterns and burn through the gloom, and expensive enough to kill you.

Nothing snaps to anything. Embers are loose particles that roll and settle wherever the thread happens to sag, so every catch is a placement problem rather than a timing test. Rooms get darker and hungrier until the thread runs out, and the score is how far you got.

Five facts

  • The avatar is the rope. There is no character anywhere in the game — the two endpoints of the thread are your two fingertips.
  • Fuel is both the health bar and the light radius, so seeing further and dying faster are the same decision.
  • The app ships with zero bundled assets: every texture is drawn at launch and every sound is synthesised on the device, which is why the whole game is about two megabytes.
  • There is no network code in the binary at all. It runs identically in airplane mode, and nothing ever leaves the device.
  • Built by one person, localised into 16 languages.

Assets

Free to use in any coverage of the game.
